Ebele volunteered 16 hours at the Leonard Cheshire Disability in Bromley, a residential home for people of all ages with disabilities. As an activities volunteer, she was able to help plan a range of fun activities for residents as well as managing the schedule. She wanted to gain experience volunteering in a care home and eventually get a job.
“Before I started Headstart I wanted to improve my time management and confidence in speaking to new people. My experience at the care home was different than expected. I didn't know that most of the adults were unable to communicate verbally and so I was able to learn how to interact with them in others ways. Creating activities and planning schedules whilst engaging with the residents at Leonard Cheshire strengthened my time management skills.
The AGL workshop gave me valuable interview tips which made me confident going into my interview. That confidence allowed me to enjoy the experience. [At the workshop] I learned more about networking, customer service, and honed my interpersonal skills. My volunteering experience [also] definitely helped during my interview, especially because the role I applied for was connected to charity”.
Ebele was successful in her interview with Zendesk and completed a week long work placement in their CSR team, which is responsible for the social responsibility of the company and staff
“My work placement was amazing as I was given independence and treated like one of the staff. My Zendesk placement also improved my time management as I succeeded in completing my project by planning my time around the daily schedule. The Zendesk team were extremely welcoming and I found it easy to talk to different members of staff and get advice. I am so grateful I found out about Headstart as it's given me more confidence and invaluable experience.”
“How do you get a job when they ask for experience but you need experience for that? Most of us have faced that cycle. Luckily, Headstart did exactly that, it gave me that ‘headstart’ I needed.”
